Sound Dampening

Sound Dampening Installation
There are several reasons to sound dampen your van, but the main reason is to reduce the amount of internal and external noise you hear while driving. The sound dampening material we used is made of a butyl rubber material which lowers the frequency of vibrations, thus reducing the noise. We actually didn't realize how much noise we heard until after we added sound deadening material.

Installing sound dampening material was one of the first things we did after cleaning and prepping the van. For us, this made a huge difference in the mount of road noise we heard while driving. The installation was straight-forward and easy to do.

Tips:

Covering about 30-35% of the interior surfaces in your van is plenty to remove the majority of road noise you hear. When adding additional material, the law of diminishing returns starts to kick in.

Installation Steps:

Cut each of the KILMAT pieces in half

Clean surface with degreaser

For each piece,

Peel off the backing material

Apply piece to any large open areas on the walls, doors, ceiling, and floor of the van

Use roller to get a tight bond (optional)

Notes:

Since most of the road noise was coming from the wheel wells, we covered them completely.
