Winter Getaway 22/23 – Episode 11

Montana-Valley-Mountains
A window into our 3-day dash from the PNW to Phoenix!

3-Day Dash

In mid- December we left Birdie in Phoenix and drove to the PNW to be with our family over the holidays. It was so awesome to see all the beautiful people we miss so much when we’re on the road. We enjoyed a joyous, snowy, festive holiday! We hope you did too!

Looking ahead into January we found a small window, a break in the weather! We took off on the 11th and headed back to Phoenix exactly the same way we had come home – it seemed to be the best winter weather route – from Washington, to Idaho, Montana, Idaho again, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and finally back to Arizona and back to Birdie. This drive is beautiful – the mountains and valleys in these areas are all unique and all very picturesque. We made the trip in 3 days and had really great weather the entire way. Whew! There’s a video montage of our trip on our Instagram account:

Shoutout to Best Western Plus Abbey Inn in St. George, Utah for the absolute best pet room ever. There was a dog bed, squeaky toy, bowls and even a bag of treats. I think Ninja must have booked this room – he didn’t seem at all surprised by all the pet accessories. In fact, it was like he expected it!

Reunited With Birdie!

Once reunited with Birdie in Phoenix, we dropped the rental car off at the airport and had the best BBQ take out at Big Nates Family BBQ in Mesa. Don’t let the location fool you – it’s in a business area. The brisket was melt in your mouth and smokey, and the sides were super nummy as well!

We had an overnight reservation at the Lost Dutchman State Park. We stayed here in December before the holidays on our first leg of the Winter Getaway trip – there are great views of the Superstition Mountains from all the campsites. And we love, love, love all the unique cacti in the park. It was dark when we arrived but we were treated to a beautiful sunrise the next morning. As I was making the trek to the restrooms, a large jackrabbit hopped past me on the road. I don’t know where he was going, but he was on a mission! And so are we – we’re headed to Tombstone! But more than that, we’re continuing to travel. To see and experience new places. To explore an alternate lifestyle that is more about experiences and less about the daily grind. Have we gone beyond ‘searching’ for our copper pot and we’re living it instead? Perhaps!
